Family Medicine Faculty Physician, Cahaba+UAB Family Medicine Residency, Clinical Director of HIV Care, Cahaba Medical Care
Why I love to teach
I have dedicated my career to bridging the gap in primary care for individuals living with HIV, driven by an early recognition of the critical role primary care physicians can play in the lives of this patient population, while doing my Family Medicine training in Memphis, Tennessee. With an understanding of the importance of accessible, compassionate care, I was motivated to equip myself with the skills needed to address the unique needs of HIV patients. After seeing the need for integrated HIV care in primary practice, I relocated to Birmingham, Alabama, where I led the establishment of a comprehensive HIV primary care treatment program within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) network across central Alabama. This program is not only aimed at serving a broad geographic region but also removes barriers to care and ensures access to high-quality, continuous treatment for underserved communities in urban and rural areas throughout Alabama. Beyond clinical practice, I am deeply committed to education and mentorship. Recognizing that the future of HIV care lies in the hands of well-trained, empathetic healthcare providers, I implemented training initiatives for family medicine residents and advanced practice providers (APPs), emphasizing the integration of HIV care into family medicine. Through hands-on training and mentorship, I have guided many emerging healthcare professionals, instilling in them the knowledge and confidence to offer compassionate, skilled care to HIV patients.
