In which of the following conditions is the presence of B-lines on ultrasound unexpected?

a. Interstitial lung disease

b. Asthma exacerbation

c. Bacterial pneumonia

d. Pulmonary contusion

e. Pulmonary edema

Check your answer!

The correct answer is b. Asthma exacerbation.

Explanation:

Recall that sonographic B-lines can be seen in a range of conditions, including congestive heart failure, pulmonary contusion, or pneumonia.

B-lines are due to an increased density of the alveoli or interstitium. This is not a feature of asthma.

All of the other diseases can produce B-lines in some fashion. Interstitial lung disease, pneumonia, pulmonary contusion, and pulmonary edema are all capable of producing B-lines, so the correct answer is "b. Asthma exacerbation."
